Bringing renewable energy  to life in Indonesia: Solar  and beyond

The cost of solar modules was originally very high back in the 1970s, US$76 Watts-peak (wp), but they have become much more affordable quite recently (less than $0.50/wp in 2015) thanks to several decades of research and development.

While upfront costs tend to be relatively high for a solar system, the levelized cost of electricity of utility-scale solar power plants ($0.13/kWh by 2020) is rapidly approaching that of conventional coal-fired power plants ($0.10/kWh, according to the US Energy Information Administration).

Indonesia, Hungary step up renewable energy cooperation

President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo received Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban as well as dozens of business delegates at a reception party held at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta on Monday, during which Indonesia welcomed an investment plan from a Hungarian company to build a solar power plant in Central Tapanuli, North Sumatra.

The two countries expressed a commitment to boost bilateral cooperation amid Indonesia’s ambitious target of 23 percent of total power provided by renewable sources by 2025. Currently, only 6 percent of the nation’s energy comes from renewable sources.

Coping With Water Scarcity In Indonesia

Java has less than 10 percent of the country’s water, whereas more than 140 million people live on the island, nearly 60 percent of the country’s population. Kalimantan has 30 percent of Indonesia’s water and only inhabited by six percent of Indonesia’s population. With Java being most heavily populated but having a small percentage of the country’s water, the island is predicted to face a clean water crisis.
