Jakarta, February 2026 — Indo Renergy & Electric 2026 Expo & Forum continues to advance its role as Indonesia’s No.1 International Renewable Energy & Electric Industry Technology Event through international engagement. This approach reflects Indo Renergy & Electric’s commitment to supporting the development of Indonesia’s energy ecosystem by connecting domestic stakeholders with regional and global networks.
Within this broader context, waste to energy (WtE) is emerging as a growing area of opportunity in Indonesia, particularly as cities seek integrated solutions to address increasing waste volumes alongside energy transition objectives. Indonesia has set a target to develop 33 waste to energy plants across major cities as part of efforts to manage urban waste and explore alternative energy sources. This direction aligns with global market momentum, as the waste to energy sector is projected to expand significantly, with the global market expected to reach USD 77.30 billion by 2030. In parallel, interest from foreign companies and project developers suggests that Indonesia’s WtE sector is gradually moving toward greater market readiness, opening opportunities for technology providers, investors, and solution partners across the value chain.

Alongside these developments, expert perspectives highlight the importance of aligning opportunities with responsible implementation. Program Manager Plastic Smart Cities WWF Indonesia, Sekti Mulatsih, noted that the transformation of waste to energy is one of several approaches currently being assessed and developed in various cities. “In this context, we believe that the use of technology that utilizes gas from landfills (landfill gas extraction) and energy production from biogas can be part of a more environmentally friendly energy transition solution, as long as it is carried out with the principle of caution and strict environmental standards,” she stated. This perspective reflects a broader view that waste to energy can offer meaningful opportunities when supported by appropriate technology choices, clear environmental safeguards, and long term sustainability considerations.
